218C - ANSEL aTOMs

Project

Picture
The objective of this year's game was to create RC boats that captured "atolls" with RFID cards on them. The boats were called "atoll capture vehicles (ACVs)" and their respective controllers were called "capture vehicle controllers (CVCs)". Below is a description of the project.

The goal of this quarter's project was to introduce us to wireless communication, and as part of the project a class-wide protocol was created (please see below). As part of the protocol, each 2v2 game started off with a teammate finding process, in which, two boats paired up by swiping the same color ID fob (green or red). Teams have 255 seconds to capture as many atolls as they can around the Halo fountain. The team with the most captured atolls at the end of the round wins.

Strategy

Our strategy was quite simple: go around and capture atolls as fast as possible. We timed ourselves out in the hoop fountain with our prototypes and found that we could get around the fountain and inner ring in about 1 min 15 secs. Knowing that it might take us sometime to maneuver and capture atolls, we anticipated that we would be able to make two rounds of capturing atolls if needed. During presentation day, this was not too far from accurate; we captured all the atolls in about half the 255 second period.
